Part 1 Topics:Noise, Advertising

Noise (New)

  1. Do you mind noise?

Yes, I do mind it. I normally need a quiet environment to do anything and any noise that doesn’t come from myself can be very distractive. I mean, I can tolerate some non-lyrical music as background noise but that’s it.

  1. What types of noise do you come across in your daily life?

Well, this being China, where people generally have less public awareness, there’s all kinds of noise in the city, hair saloons blaring out incredibly loud techno music, car horns honking incessantly or even just people shouting. It can be pretty maddening if you’re not used to it.

  1. Are there any sounds that you like?

Yes, there are. For example, I like the sound of raindrops on rooftops or windows, my cats meowing for attention and the message alert on my phone. All of these sound very pleasant to me.

  1. Where can you hear loud noise?

Well, in the city, there are building sites that can be rather noisy in the day but at least they know to stop after dark. Also, if you live near the railway tracks, you can hear trains passing by regularly which I guess makes it rather difficult to sleep. Then of course, airports can be incredibly noisy, what with all the jet planes taking off and landing but that’s not exactly in the city.

  1. Do you think there is too much noise in modern society?

Yes, I do, but I think that’s just part of the urban lifestyle and if you can’t stand it, city life’s probably not your thing. Also, I think there are differences between different cultures. Some cultures just don’t care as much about noise as others, I guess.

  1. Are cities becoming noisier?

I don’t think they are, not significantly, ‘cause I remember my hometown being noisier in the old days with all the big factories inside the city and very serious traffic problems. Now the situation has improved a lot, I think.

  1. How do you feel about noise when you are working or studying?

I can’t get anything done if there’s constant noise. That’s why I prefer to work late at night or in the early mornings. I’m probably also quite different to a lot of people in that I find even background music distracting.

Advertising (New)

  1. Are there many advertisements in your country?

Yes, loads. There’s advertising everywhere. It doesn’t matter if you’re watching TV or surfing the internet or on your daily commute, you’ll find yourself surrounded by advertisements.

  1. Why do you think there are so many advertisements now?

Well, because when you have a booming economy, all kinds of businesses and products spring up and they all need customers, so it’s essential to get your name out there, you know, leaving an impression on people’s minds so that when they go shopping, they’ll recognize your product.

  1. What are the various places where we see advertisements?

Wherever there are people in large numbers, so we may see them on the metro, busy intersections or even before movies. Then, there’s television and popular websites. You even have people sticking flyers into your car windows, which is extremely annoying, by the way.

  1. How do you feel about advertisement?

Well… I think they’re a necessary evil. I don’t know anyone that claims they like ads but there’s no way we can get rid of them completely. I don’t like them either but I understand why they exist. My only wish is for advertisers to make them entertaining so they’re at least  somewhat tolerable.

  1. Do you often see advertisements where you live?

Yes, there are billboards on the roadside and text ads in the back windows of taxis. Also, you constantly get flyers or business cards stuck into your car window. I mean you sometimes have to admire these people’s determination. My car is usually parked right next to a police station and they still do it!

  1. Do you like advertisements on TV?

Oh no. They’re a pet hate of mine. I mean they’re so interruptive that I sometimes lose interest in a show I’m watching. Also, the production value of some of these commercials on local TV is horrendous so you start questioning your own sanity after repeated viewing.

  1. Have they managed to encourage/persuade you to buy their products?

I don’t actually remember buying anything because of the commercials, although I suspect I may have done it subconsciously. I mean that’s how these things work, isn’t it?

  1. How do you like advertisements on the Internet?

Well, they’re generally less annoying than TV commercials because you can choose not to look at them on a webpage. However, they’ve started to put advertisements before videos, which I find rather irritating.

  1. What do you think about the development of advertising in China today?

Well, it’s catching up very quickly but what I find incomprehensible is how they choose to imitate the most annoying aspects of Western advertising instead of the great production value and psychological impact some of them have, but I suppose that’s how you start and they’ll get everything right in the end.
